Remove the overflow pipe(s) from the carb to canister to check for overflow.
If they are, disconnect the fuel pump and run the engine till it empties the
carbs, then reconnect the pump.  The resultant flow should flush out
anything in the float valves.  If it doesn't then replace the valves.  If it
does, but they start leaking again soon, then you still have dirt in the
system.

If you unscrew the damper cap, lift it up, and can feel the pressure of the
oil when you push it back down again you have enough oil.  Some topping-up
instructions are incorrect in that they show the oil level above the top of
the damper tube.  Any oil above this level will be rapidly drawn into the
engine.  In my experience you should be able to go for many thousands of
miles without having to top up.
