Someone made mention of getting the vehicle titled through getting the
vehicle inspected, then dealing with it if it's reported stolen, etc. I've
never dealt with this, but in Missouri you go through all the hoops, then
submit a bond for twice the amount of the NADA value of the car. If I
understand the rules correctly, if, after three years, there are no claims
made against the bond, it expires, and AFAIK you then have a clean title.
Of course, given the average helpfulness and knowledge of a license office
employee, you may have to do some digging to find out what applies in your
state.

The idea about doing a bill of sale purchase may be less hassle. If you can
find someone you trust to handle it, it should be relatively painless. As
an alternative, I've come across several companies located in bill of sale
states that will provide such a service for a fee.
