This is generally called exhaust explosion. A backfire is back, thru the
carb. It can be caused by improper ignition timing, running too rich a
mixture,
or possibly a hole in the exhaust system, which allows fresh air to mix with
unburned gas and ignite in the hot pipe.
Try leaning the carb and check the timing. I wouldn't hurt to adjust the
valve lash if it hasn't been done since the rebuild.
