Are you certain the timing is correct? Turn the engine until #1 is at TDC on 
compression stroke (valves closed). The rotor should then be aimed at the 
location of the spark plug wire for #1. On most engines it is possible to 
install the distributor drive gear wrong. Timing can easily be 180 degrees 
off... 

Are the spark plug wires in the right order? (I don't recall the firing order 
for a six cylinder off hand).

If you have fuel, compression and a spark (at approximately the right time), it 
should run. So double check those three things.
