The keyword here is "purge".  I would make sure that you have an exit for the
oxygen to escape from.  The CO needs to push out the oxygen that is in the
tank.  The trick is to empty it of the gas that causes the combustion (oxygen). 
In the welding shop, all purging is done with an inlet and an outlet, otherwise
you are only mixing the carbon monoxide with the oxygen and not totally
eliminating the latter.  Blowing yourself up is a large price to pay for saving
a couple hundred bucks in my estimation.  I'd make darn sure I knew what I was
doing before tackling this.
