Small parts I clean and de-rust with muriatic acid. I use a plastic tray
such as the Rubbermaid product that is intended for under the bed storage
(about 3' long, 1' wide and about 6") deep for long narrow things and a
small plastic bucket for other small parts. Submerge parts and in about an
hour, the rustiest piece of metal comes out as clean, gray steel. At this
point it is important to thoroughly wash (scrub) the parts with soap and
water a couple of times and then blow dry. Prime and seal asap. Keep the
acid covered as the fumes are nasty. The acid can be re-used numerous
times. It's available at hardware stores and/or pool supply houses.
Does anyone else do this?
