That sounds like 18 or 19 gage.
According to my Machinery's Handbook you will find:

19 gage is .0418
18 gage is .0478

For further reference you might check the SAE site.  I don't know if they
reference this stuff there or not.

Can someone steer me to a table relating sheetmetal gauge to thickness in
inches (.000)?
It appears that most of the body metal on my '39 (current project) is about
.045".
When I go to the metal shop, what gauge do I ask for?
