Just a brief note as follow up to Bob's info. The dished fender would only
be used on the 1/2 ton (3104) pickup. The 3/4 ton (3604) pickup had enough
bed length in front of the fender that the spare would clear the fender. I
was also going to quote the Engineering Features manual that Bob did to
confirm both the location and the year of introduction. Also, the 1953
Technical Specifications lists the Spare Wheel Carrier, Side Mounted as
factory RPO #341. As a interesting (for me anyway) bit of trivia, the 1/2
ton and 1 ton specifications lists the option as Wheel Carrier, Side Mounted
with the same RPO number. One other bit of confirming info regarding year of
introduction, the Chevrolet Truck Data Book for Chevrolet Salesman (reprint
with a 1949 copyright date) makes no mention of a side mount spare tire
carrier in either the specifications sections of the section on Optional
Truck Equipment. By the way, mine is mounted on the driver's (left) side.
