Jack is right. I did this swap, albeit on a 1962 1/2 ton Chevy, and aside
from wishing I had gone to a 292 I would do it all over again. I installed a
700R4 behind it and it is a fantastic combination. The only reason I
mentioned the 292 is that the 700R4 would have bolted right up to the 292
with out an adaptor, which is not cheap. If you want to chat about this
more, ping me off the list and I will answer any questions I can. The 261
and the 235 are the same outside dimensions and the mounts are exactly the
same. The 261 has provisions for side mounts on the front and I would
recommend using them if you are going to an automatic tranny.

There's no substitute for cubic inches! Especially if plan an automatic and
A/C you will appreciate the additonal grunt of the 261. Parts availability
and rebuild cost are essentially the same. Check Inliners site for
important differences in head torque pattern for the 261 (even with 235
head).
