That sounds about right Joe.  I measured the same when I was hunting down a 
rear for my 53 1/2 ton.
I also checked the width of my 72 Chevelle rear and it was pretty close to the 
same width as the AD
rear.  Unfortunately, I wasn't about to strip my Chevelle for the parts!  I 
ended up with a 10 bolt
posi from an '85 Camaro Berlinetta that was also a similar width.  All it took 
was grinding off the
old coil spring perches and other flotsam, and welding on the perches from the 
truck springs.  I
went with an aftermarket spring replacement from Chassis Engineering.  I have 
not had a chance to
drive this rear end, but I rebuilt it with a new Richmond gear set, 3.23:1 
ratio.  I don't plan on
many tire-shredding burnouts, so the 10-bolt should suffice.
