[oletrucks] 6 volt battery/8 volt batteries

I have a 53 chevy 3600 series pickup truck.  I have a
6 volt system and I was told that an 8 volt battery
would work for me.  I bought one and put it in, and it
worked like a jem for about a week.  Then, something
went wrong and started killing the battery.  Do I need
to change something or do something else, HELP, HELP. 
What do I need to do?
