Welcome to the group! I think it would be safe to say that we all welcome you.
GMC had a 12 volt option, but I can't tell you that the starter remained a foot
stomper style. Its so easy to switch to 12 volts. This is what I have done.
Change every bulb to a 12 volt type, change the coil (this is a better way to go
that adding a resistor to drop the volts down to 6) to a 12 volt resistor type.
Install a resistor in series for the fuel gauge on the hot side (use a volt
meter to figure that out or a test light). Change the heater motor to 12 volts
would be best, but its cheaper and a lot easier to use another resistor to drop
the volts down to 6. That requires a ceramic resistor with about a 10 amp
rating.
As for your truck's driveline, look to see if you have exposed u-joints. If it
looks like a length of well tubing between the trans and pinion, then its an
inclosed type. if you see u-joints, then its not an inclosed type.
Do you need the speedo and gauges or anything else? I am parting one out.
