check for leaky vacuum hoses, a bad vacuum diverter valve, a fault in the
computer system, mal adjusted choke, out of time with an overly rich carb or
F.I.
system. Backfiring through the exhaust is very hard on the catalytic converter.
its at that age that all the vacumm hoses should be replaced. Bend a few and it
is shiny hard or very dull black, they need replacing.
