Given that it's a ford I would say check vacuum hoses first. This is
common with broken, collapsed or "modified" vacuum hoses. 

I saw this a lot in the early eighties when our local rednec....er..,
customers would remove "them damn pollution controls" usually by taking
ALL the vacuum hoses off and plugging them :-) Of course they never
seemed to get around to taking the belt off the A.I.R. pump although
they had disabled the deceleration diverter valve by removing the vacuum
hose. 

The net result was retarded timing (no vacuum advance), a rich fuel
mixture (no EGR), lots of raw gas from letting the engine decelerate the
vehicle (manual tranny), and finally lots of fresh air being pumped
straight into the already overheated exhaust manifolds (KaBoom)! 

Or it could be an ignition problem, check the cap for traces of spark
jumping and the plug wires if they run close to each other.
