It is usually the clutch overrun assembly, sometimes refered to as the
bendix spring. The clunking sound is the clutch trying to stop spinning and
not the gear slamming into the flywheel gear. If you get under the truck
when the starter is being engaged you will see what I mean. You can buy just
the overrun assembly for under twenty $. And its fairly simple to do
yourself.
