Don't know if this was answered before, but here $.02 worth of info.

In the PPG line, the primers I'm familiar with are:

DPLF.  This is an epoxy non-sanding corrosion resistant primer.  Comes in
several colors.  Great stuff.
NCP.  This is an epoxy high build (sandable) primer.  Sand with 360 dry,
then 600 or 800 wet.  Love it.
DX.  This is a conversion coating to aid adhesion to bare metal.

Other manufacturers have similar products.
