Having recently completed this "painful" evolution.  I found that soaking
the glue residue with regular old lighter fluid then scraping with fresh
razor blades removed the gook.  I kept it very wet, and used "lots" of fresh
razor blades.

Perfect results.  About an hour per side window.  (Seems a State Trooper
felt the tint was too dark.  The judge did not care about the time it took,
just that it was GONE!)
