I have used the "water trick" and it does work.  Take a soda pop bottle full
of water and slowly pour it down the carb while running the engine at about
2000 rpm, the engine will bog down....keep it running, do not stall the
engine (put thumb over bottle to regulate the flow).  It might take 2 - 20
oz bottles to see improvement.

The water turns to steam and cleans the carbon out.  It is also better than
ATF for our environment.

Just remember DON'T lock the motor by pouring it in to fast, this isn't a
race....take your time.
