The issue on bearings is moot to me as I've replaced the front and rear
suspension on my truck.
The truck I just sold had a completely rebuilt front end, ball bearings and
all. I would think the ball bearings would wear normally if
greased/maintained properly regardless of tire type. However, if the
bearings were worn in on 6 ply narrow bias ply tires and then went to 235/75
or 60 series radial tires the bearings would tend to wear in different spots
based on loading; and subsequently wear them out quicker. The different side
loading should also wear other related suspension components.
Of course that's my opinion... I could be wrong.

The ball bearings (original) in my truck have survived more
than 100,000
miles, at least 20k of which have been on radials from the
previous owner of
my truck. I finally had to replace one of the inners because
of a shattered
ball (and failed grease seal), but the rest of the bearings
are doing just
fine still. The cages show a little wear but the balls and
races are in
great shape. Are you sure the 'old salt' wasn't trying to
sell you bearings?
I can buy at least two full sets of ball bearings for what
it costs to
upgrade.

When I went to radial tires on my truck an "old salt" who
had been a
front end guy at a Chevrolet garage for many years told me I
needed to
change to tapered roller bearings because the radial tires
would have a
"bad effect" on the ball bearings. I have had the roller
bearing in my
truck for almost 15K miles with a lot of that mileage being
on the
Freeway at between 65 and 75 MPH and I would swear by the
roller
bearings.
