Could also be a kink in the outer sheath of the cable. If you are
pulling out the inner cable, it helps to disconnect at the tranny
and lay the cable out straight over the radiator support.
Could also be that the cable is a little too long.
Also, if you put a power drill on the inner cable and spin it, the
speedo should run smooth, at around 40-50 MPH (at least around there
on my drill) If this cures the problem, the problem is almost certainly
a kink in the cable, probably next to the transmission where it has
to make a right angle bend. A few nylon cable wraps may hold the
cable straighter if this is the problem.
Some people say to use grease to lube the cable, others say dry lubes
like graphite only. I've had good luck with just a dab or two of
grease as the cable is being pushed/pulled in. That's what my old
man used when these were "newtrucks".
