If you know for sure that the VIN is not in the system, simply make
application for new title (form REG343). CSAA (AAA) will check the VIN for
members. If you don't know the status of the VIN, you may be faced with a
bill for past due reg. plus fines. This has happened to me and the bill was
more than the vehicle was worth. Worse yet, it could show as stolen or
liened. Know the status of your VIN before you go to DMV.

Also, I don't know about your local DMV office, but mine seems to hate to do
anything out of the ordinary and they will look for any little detail on
which to sent you home. New reg apps require the VIN be verified by DMV.
How can you get it to DMV if it's not registered? They can't answer that
question! I trailer or make an appointment so the move is on record.

Good luck, you'll need it. Didn't mean to rant and rave but I have a hard
time getting along with bureaucrats, I guess.
