I've been having the same problem you've described with my '58 4400, except
I haven't tried pulling the choke out to see if it runs better that way or
not. I have notice that when I downshift to the lower gear to increase the
engine rpm, it runs fine but when I grab the next gear, she just wants to
give up. I originally thought against "fuel delivery problems" because of
the good running at higher rpm and thought it was an ignition/wires problem,
but today I pulled the carb off and apart... large amounts of dirt and crud
in the bottom of the float bowl. ' looks like I'm picking up a rebuild kit
tomorrow.
I'm interested in what you've found out on this.
