Big blocks, especially from the 70s and 80s, are notorious
for having the lifter bores badly machined on the production
line. Not sure if this is what's causing your problem...is
the oil pressure ok? Some possible causes of low oil
pressure include a bad fitting distributor, and worn
bearings. Although I have a 396 that has good pressure and
one lifter gets noisy after sitting for a while, it takes a
few miles to calm down again. I'll probably have to rebuild
this engine before too many miles anyways, but the noisy
lifter makes me nervous because big blocks also eat cams,
and having a lifter rattle (from bleeding down) is hard on
the cam.
