I don't know if this will help answer any questions about GMC logo's, but I 
have a stack of 1958 GMC sales folders and they all have the "fancy" M.

I also have some folders from 1960 and they have GMC in a pretty straight up 
and down font with little feet on the top and bottom of the M.  The GMC on 
the hoods has the letters stretched out almost oval in shape.
