Chuckle chuckle... just been there, just done that on my 55 2nd.

My 454 is the same as your 396.  I have a Saginaw pump and upper drivers
side alternator.  Had the exact same interference problems you describe.

Need to figure out a few things first.  Do you have a short or long water
pump.  You will have more options with a long pump.

You can put the alternator all sorts of places.  Do you plan to run an AC
compressor?  If not, options are even more.  2 things I considered are
putting the alternator on the passenger side, mid height:
