Skip,

In my opinion, the answer is to buy an engine crane.  You can get a
very nice 2Ton one for under $200.

At my dad's, we put up 3 2x8's sistered together and set them on top
of a 3 vertical 2x8's on each side of a single bay.  We have pulled 
engines with this.  But you have to move the car from under then eng.
when pull or installing it.

I find it a lot easier to move the eng and crane than the car.
