When I bought my 78, the engine had been completely rebuilt. Don't know
if all the stuff on it was stock. The hole in the block for the oil
filter had a screw in attachment that had the same size threads on both
sides. It was a male/male fitting with a hex shape in the middle. It
created a male attachment from a female to allow the use of a spin on
filter. Don't know if that was original equipment.
This fitting required an oil filter with a hole that was smaller than
most of the filters now produced. When I went to replace this filter, I
had a lot of trouble finding a high quality filter (ala the Pure 1 by
Purolator) that would fit. The car came with some odd brand (Brooklands,
or something like that, I think). I finally found a NAPA store that had
a cross index that referenced the adaptor, which is a WIX part number
that would adapt the larger hole filter to the car. That's the number I
put in the tip. Some of you may already have the larger sized on your
cars. Seems Tom O'Malley had the same situation as I.
