Habit?

Actually, there are grooves machined in the block part of the rear main
bearing cap. No corresponding grooves in the cap itself. Once the cap is
bolted in place, theoretically the washers can't rotate with the crank
because the cap is in the way.

You should be able to slide the old ones out and the new ones in without
removing the crankshaft, in which case it can indeed be done with the
engine still in the car. Careful not to gouge any critical surfaces with
whatever tool you use to start the removal.

Warning: I was unable to do this on my Herald when I tried it a long
time ago - the new washers wouldn't go in. Fortunately, the old ones
would. Since joining the list I have heard success stories though, so I
now suspect I was using oversize washers where they weren't called for.

Warning: Put the new washers in the right way, or you engine will
quickly self destruct! The bearing surface (the one with the oil groove)
must face the crankshaft. The backing surface must face the block!

Clean your hands thoroughly before you install the new washers. Oil the
washers on all sides. Have a spotlessly clean surface for them to fall
on when they squirt out of your hand :-}

Good luck. Go for it!
