Had a problem with 'dead' spots on my starter, too. Upon taking it apart
I found the brushes had worn way down. Ordered a new set and changed out
the worn pair. Funny, only one pair was worn way down, and that was the
'loose' pair that was easy to replace. The other pair require
desoldering and resoldering, and they were not worn very much at all.
The 'loose' pair are connected to stud that battery goes to.
