Subject: removing fuel sender unit?

I need to remove and inspect my fuel sending unit. The tank is almost
empty. I know that the sending unit is supposed to "unscrew". I'm just not
sure how to get ahold of something to twist without breaking something.
Surely this must be a fairly simple procedure.

I see three prong thingys sticking out and three dips on the inside diameter
of the sending unit backing plate, which I assume needs to be the part
that's turned. Or do I turn the part with the three tabs sticking out from
it?

Any tips or advice would be appreciated. TIA

Best wishes,

Jeff in San Diego
