Ron I replaced mine about a month or so ago. Terrible noise. I did get a good
used fan clutch. The original tolerance ring was like new though. If you can
wobble the fan or turn it without too much force when the engine is off, then
it needs replacing. It should be pretty stable and stiff to turn when it's OK.
It should make a noise all the time (when it's bad, that is) as it's always
moving at all engine speeds.

Hi Ron, the problem can be just the tolerance ring in the fan clutch.
They go for around $9.00CAN at Obsolete Auto (www.obsoleteauto.com),
part no. EN-RING-UKC759. They also have the fan clutch listed for
  $189CAN, part no. EN-CLUTC-UKC3532.

If the problem is with the clutch, I would change over to an electric
fan. Does anyone know after the conversion one can fit the older type
water pump with the fixed fan (cheaper) instead of the newer one for
  the clutch fan?
