For all us Spitfire owners in California, look out.
there is now a senate bill (SB 1811) going thru that will change smog laws.

Currently 1973 and older cars are exempt. In 2004 the exempt years will
be 30 or more(ie starting in 2004 1974 cars become exempt)

this new law will fix the exempt year at 1974. (1975 and later will NEVER be
exempt)

this law will also create a "classic car" vehicle class that will require
you to pay $25 for a mandatory special license plate (I assume no more
original black plate california cars?) and a declaration that the car will
only be used for car clubs, trips to the repair shop and other non-everyday
use.

What this law does is that our promised roll back of the smog tests for 30
year old cars will stop, Of course the new smog tests are such, that many
old cars will not pass.

If you have a classic car, and wish to remain exempt, the dept of motor
vehicles will sell you a special license plate, and demand you do not use
your car for non-classic car trips. The state intends to restrict your use
of a classic car to 2500 or 5000 miles per year (depending on which version
of the bill is passed)

this is happening now, so please write or call to stop SB 1811.

this bill will undo SB42 which relaxed the smog rules on older cars, and
create the special license class of classic cars, with restricted milage and
use. Once our classic cars are tagged with a special plate, how long until
the state says, Sunday driving only!

  Get active and write!

look up the california senate on the web, refernece SB 1811
