Sounds like the same problem I once experienced when I had a full fuel tank.
Some background: I had replaced the Mk1 tank with one from a 1500 and simply
plugged the vent line since there was no carbon canister
to route it to. I thought the filler cap would provide the proper ventilation
because the Mk1 tank did not have a vent hole.
Anyway, what was happening is when I filled the tank, there was not enough air
space in the tank to allow for the suction provided by
the fuel being pumped from the tank. The car would start gradually starving
for fuel when enough vacuum developed in the tank to
counteract the suction of the pump. THe result was the same as your symptoms.
Stopping the car only for a short period would allow
the tank pressure to balance itself and off I would go for another short run.
I solved the problem by running a vent hose to the right rear fender well and
have had no further problems.
