Cheap spring compressors can be purchased for about $20. But beware that the
Spitfire uses a very small
radius coil, with the shock filling it tremendously. This makes it quite a
challenge to work with normal (cheap)
fingered spring compressors. You can very easily ruin a set of good shocks by
damaging their body using
these compressors.

I have heard that an old brake drum fits over the entire unit, and can be used
to compress the spring nicely.
The axle hole supposedly fits over the spring perch, but not the spring, or
something like that. I'll try it next
time myself.

As for the rear end alignment, I believe you can check this quickly by having
the car sit drooped, and then
roll it backwards. If it promptly fixes itself, this is a strong indicator
(proof?) that the rear end needs alignment.
