If you go further down the manifold on the rear is a threaded plug.  This 
location will give you a better mixing
view of the overall engine engine, and not be so single cylinder biased.

On a '75 Spit 1500 the EGR valve is mounts under the carbs
sticking forward out of the exhaust manifold.

Mine has long since bit the dust.

    QUESTION?
What I'm wondering is has anyone ever used this aperture to install
an O2 sensor?   

It seems like a might convenient place to put it.
