I've never been comfortable about doing that on a Spitfire bonnet because of 
the constant force exerted
by the gas strut.  Those struts put out a good bit of force, and the sheetmetal 
of a Spitfire bonnet is not
set up to deal with that sort of force, especially on the inner fender arches.  
  It may well work, I'm just
concerned about long term problems.
