By saying you "raised up the pump" I'm going to take it that you mean you
lifted the nozzle, breaking the seal on the boot. In which case, the
problem is not with your car, but with the Stage II vapor recovery
system at the station. Ie, the way the system sucks the vapors
away as you refill. There is nothing inherent in the neck of a
Spitfire that would prevent it from venting. Not even the later ones
with the restrictor plate inside.

The metal bending surprises me though. There isn't much pressure
from a gas nozzle...normally. And if there was, it wouldn't cut off
and you'd have a fountain of gas once the tank got filled (been there
done that). Even then, it shouldn't bulge the tank. Perhaps the
sounds you heard were the tank sliding down on some loose
fasteners? It is a vertical mounting after all.

Well, it was time to fuel it up, and I found a few problems.

First off, I filled it up a tiny bit, and stopped. When I raised up the
pump, I heard a WHOOSH of air. As I was filling it up more, I could hear
metal bending, which I am assuming was the fuel tank.

When I was done filling it up with 10 dollars or so of gas(it had 1/8th of a
tank in it already), some gas spilled out.
