The rear box is effectively held in three places - by the two flexible
supports onto the car body, at the rear of the box, and by the clamp onto
the main pipe.

This should be plenty adequate, because only a few inches further along the
main pipe should be held securely in place by a bracket that attaches to the
big bracket that goes across the front of the differential.  The connection
includes a rubber grommet to avoid transmitting exhaust vibrations into
other components, and to give a very limited amount of flexibility into the
setup.

If this connection to the differential is missing, this would explain the
rattling!  The next connection forward of this point is the one onto the
gearbox.
