Hello David,
What kind of captive nuts are used for the alignment screws?
On Spitfiires I've seen nylon nuts in an oblong hole, on others I've seen a
'nyloc' type of steel nut held in a conical depression by a small metal
clip.
Perhaps this is a clue in your case.
