There is quite a bit on this in the archive (which has been inaccessable for
a while.)  My understanding is that you want to use the lowest octane
possible without pinging.  For my car this is also the medium grade.

I'm no expert, but I always use middle of the road. My goal is for a cleaner
burn with less ping, yet not too hot of a burn. Seems most manufacturers
recommend something above the low/regular unleaded octane levels, but the
premium is overkill I think. Just "mho"....

We are about to become new -old spitfire owners.  It looks like a 78 - 1500 
with the one Z-S carb.  What grade gasoline gets run in a car like this?  
Around here we have regular - midgrade - premium.  Thanks for your help.
