I can tell you it's STILL u-joints.  
Waaaay back when, the u-joint cup retaining clips were coded for different
thickness.  One would install the proper thickness of clip to remove any
slop between the cups.  this process is even tin the many of the repair
manuals.  Now-a-days the clip is just one thickness, invariably too thin
and what happens is the now slightly worn yolks allows the now *slightly
loose* cups to "slap" back and forth inside the bore.  The joint may be
new, and still good.  What your hearing is the inner shafts of the cup
slamming into the cups.  Probably not too much of a concern since the
travel is very small and the shock loading proportionally small.  The only
real cure is to install shims or the correct thickness of clip - (been
there done that MANY times)
