A long time ago I had a Datsun, and its drive shaft started vibrating.
When I removed it, I found that the little needles in one
joint had actually started crumbling.  So I doubt that a "bit" of stiffness
would cause a big problem.  Actually, they should be a little stiff.

Look for a situation there the movement is stiff, except for a
narrow range at the normal operating angle, where it is loose.
That suggests that the needles have gotten flat spots worn on them.

Also, inspect the shaft to see if a balancing weight has fallen off.
(They are usually bits of sheet metal spot-welded on the tube).
That happened to me once, too.
