Brian,

Everyone's gauge seems to read something different!  It seems there is a lot
of inconsistancy with the temperature senders.

You can buy a 'radiator clear' product at your local car parts store (at
least you can in the UK!).  Drain the coolant, fill with pure water and add
this liquid, run the engine at idle for 1/2 hour, drain again, and top back
up with normal coolant.  Not as effective as getting your radiator sent to a
radiator shop for a thorough de-gunking, but it should help.
