My spare Lucas alternator bit the dust last week, so I decided to do the GM
conversion. Basic information was taken from Paul Tegler's site. I really
liked his idea to "build your own bushing" for the mounting bolt. That
seems to have worked very well. When it came to the new adjusting bracket,
I decided to try using a modified turnbuckle. Results can be seen at
www.nasshg.org/wrgingerich in the GM alt directory. I don't know if anyone
else has done this, but it appears to have worked beautifully. The arm that
runs through the alt. bracket hole has a 1/4-20 thread. A washer, nut, and
a bit of thread locker finished that end. The other end of the turnbuckle
attaches using the stock bolt. Since the eyebolt is somewhat thicker than
the original bracket, I plan to replace the bolt with a slightly longer one.
The third picture shows the slight bend in the turnbuckle bolt so that it
clears the alt. fan. The adjusting locknut is also visible. Anyone out
there see any problems with this arrangement? All comments gratefully
accepted.
