A 1500 flywheel will fit.  The bolt holes are larger, so you need to use the 
little collars that places like Rimmerbros sells to fit it onto the 1296 
crankshaft.  That, or you can drill out and retap the crankshaft to the 1500 
bolt size.

As for your clutch problem, the use of a sunbeam clutch disc immediately has me 
questioning how it sized up for engagement.  If it's thin, or has a profile 
that caused it to foul, you would run into the problem you described.
