Barry,

First off - with only one flasher relay (which was the case on my 1500, and
from your description also seems to be the case for your Mk2), if one
indicator works and the other doesn't then the flasher relay cannot be the
(only) problem - something has to be different between the left and right
hand circuits, and the flasher relay is common to both.

The fast flashing could well be down to the missing dash lamp - the relay is
supposed to act funny if the current draw is incorrect, so you know a bulb
is blown. Replace the bulb in the dash, and if it still doesn't work check
the wiring to the bulb. If it still doesn't work check that the front and
rear indicator bulbs are working right.

Hold on... I've been assuming your car has a separate dash light for left
and right. My 1500 had a single light, but I don't know about Mk2s - if you
have a single light my advice is irrelevant. Do you have a single or
separate dash lights? Also, does the dash light come on when the indicator
is on (mine did), or when the indicator is off (seen that on some
non-Triumph cars)?

I've had strange problems with replacement flasher relays. The indicators
on Daffy always used to flash a bit slow, so I tried replacing the relay.
Several times, and using relays from different sources (TRGB, a Triumph
Specialist, and Halfords, a generic parts/accessories store), all with the
correct rating. In every case the indicator would go on, off, on, and then
stay on. In the end I just stuck with the original unit and put up with the
slow flashing.
