Some boneheaded previous owner has obviously screwed up your car. The ID
plate can easily be unscrewed and moved around between cars.

My experience with British Motor Heritage Trust is that they must have
the ID plate number in ordert to trace the origins of the car. They are
extremely helpful, though, and I suggest you either write to them or fax
to them your problem and the numbers you have and see if they can help.
The numbers they might find important are the body number stamped in the
footwell, the two sets of numbers stamped on little plates attached to
the door shut faces on either side (front shut faces), and the engine
number.
