You take your car to a special approved garage and pay about £25 to have it
inspected. They check a load of useful stuff including brakes on a roller
brake dyno (With the big brakes on my car they don't both to dig out the chart
and protractor to see if the % efficiency is a pass anymore!). Older cars are
exempt the emissions stuff etc. If the car passes you get a document that
says so and that is valid for a year. A car with no MOT or a short one
(unlikely to pass again) is likely to need a lot of work doing to it to get it
to pass and hence a 'for sale' price reflects that. They tend not to be too
keen on modified cars or old cars and I have found that whatever the state of
the car it is worth finding a sensible and sympathetic garage rather than one
looking for business.
Ministry of Transport = MOT test certificate.
No MOT no road tax. You can still get insurance but it is generally
invalidated in an accident without an MOT (unless the car is stored off the
public highway - ie your garage)
