Chuck -

It could be carburetor whistle.  Depending on the humidity, temperature, 
barometric pressure, throttle position, etc, etc, carbs sometimes emit a 
shrill whistle.  Quick check:  Get it up to (or past) the whistling speed, 
drop it out of gear, let the engine idle, and coast down through the 
"whistle range".  No whistle?  It's the carb (or an alternator bearing 
going away, but let's not discuss that, shall we?)
