They weren't that small and I can still shift into and out of all gears. I
think they were from the big rear bearing on the main output shaft, which
looks bent. I won't be able to really tell until I get it out.
 After the balls into the oil thing. I turned off the lights, locked the
door and found a beer to drown in.

Definatly!
the 3 small  balls are from one of the gears, there should have been 3
small springs too.
